NRSS XXIX Transmission Project (NRSS)

The Northern Region Strengthening Scheme (NRSS)-29 is the largest private sector transmission project awarded in the country till date. The project is critical for meeting the power requirements of the state of Jammu & Kashmir. The Kashmir Valley region, besides dealing with socio-economic problems, suffers from blackouts during the harsh winter months. The state currently produces only 800 MW of power and within three years will require almost 4,000 MW of power. Even though it has huge hydropower potential, it must procure power from other states for the foreseeable future. Post commissioning, our project now delivers over 1,000 MW of electricity from Punjab to the Kashmir Valley by strengthening the National Grid.

PROJECT STORY

The rough, mountainous terrain in Jammu & Kashmir, inclement weather conditions such as snow and hail, were a major cause for concern at the outset. The distance from the project sites to the nearest roadways also added to the complexity of the project, as large quantities of materials were needed to be shifted to each site. The volatile law & order situation in the state, and army activities were also identified as challenges towards execution of the project.

The established method of delivering goods to the site, via mules was thought of as time-consuming and cumbersome. It would also add an element of risk to the operation, which could have cause delays. Helicrane was commissioned to deliver the materials to the sites directly, and over 3,500 tons of materials were airdropped in and around the Pir-Panjal range. Security and support from the army ensured that the project went ahead without any problems.

The NRSS XXIX Transmission Limited project is now delivering over 1,000 MW of electricity from Punjab to the Kashmir Valley by strengthening the transmission system in these two states. The Jalandhar-Samba 400 kV D/C transmission line was commissioned in June 2016. NRSS XXIX Transmission Limited commissioned the other two 400 kV double circuit transmission lines and one 400/220 kV GIS sub-station in October 2018.

Project Detail

To strengthen the transmission system in Jammu & Kashmir and Punjab, NRSS-XXIX Transmission Limited commissioned three 400 kV Double Circuit transmission lines and one 400/220 kV GIS Substation. The project has been commissioned and now is in operating stage for the next 35 years.

“The project was dedicated to the nation by none other than Prime Minister Narendra Modi himself in February 2019.
