Avoiding Biodiversity Hotspots during NER-II Project

NER-II, the mega project spanning Assam, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh, had a line passing around the “Borail Wild-life Sanctruary.

Markhor is a large capra species native to Himalayas and it is listed on the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) red list as endangered species.
NRSS project had a line passing through Hirpora Wildlife Sanctuary. A Biodiversity Impact Assessment (BIA) was carried out and a management plan was prepared. Three alternative routes were studied for minimizing involvement of protected area and tree density.
Mitigation measures suggested in the plan were implemented in the project. We realigned the transmission line route away from movement of Markhor.
